Bridges are seen from far away and from below, often reflected in water. Good bridge lighting makes the structural idea legible, the arch, the cables, the rhythm of piers, rather than covering everything evenly.

Design priorities

  • Read the structure, light the elements that carry the load: arches, pylons, cables and pier faces.
  • Protect road users, no direct view of light sources from the carriageway or from navigation channels.
  • Use the water, reflections double the image; restrained light often looks stronger than bright light.
  • Plan maintenance, choose positions that can be reached safely, and fixings suited to vibration and humidity.

Typical luminaires

Linear luminaires along deck edges and cable lines, point lights to trace geometry, and floodlights for pylons and piers. Where the bridge is part of a city celebration programme, DMX512-capable luminaires allow scheduled colour scenes.
