The brief
The city wanted the bridge to become a landmark from the riverbanks without dazzling drivers or the boats passing below. Most nights it should look calm and architectural; on public holidays it should carry colour.
The approach
Linear luminaires run along the deck edges, aimed away from the carriageway, to draw the line of the bridge across the river. Point lights follow the arch so its shape reads clearly from both banks and in the reflection.
The everyday scene is static warm white. For festival nights, DMX512-controlled luminaires run a small set of pre-programmed colour scenes, switched by the operator's existing timer.
Points worth noting
- Luminaire positions were chosen so every fixture can be reached from the maintenance walkway.
- Fixings and cable glands were specified for humidity and vibration.
- A short mock-up on one span settled the spacing of the point lights before the full order.
