Landscape, in-ground

People judge a park at night by whether they can see where they are going and who is around them. That is a question of vertical light on faces and a clear path ahead, not of high illuminance everywhere.

A layered approach

  1. Paths and decision points, bollards and lawn lights at junctions, steps and entrances.
  2. Landmarks, a few uplit trees, walls or sculptures that help people orient themselves.
  3. Edges and water, soft light along boundaries and reflections in ponds.

Respecting the site

Warm colour temperatures sit better in planted landscapes and are kinder to insects and birds. Leave dark zones on purpose, and use light-sensor or timed switching where the park closes at night. Solar landscape lights suit locations where trenching for cables is impractical.
